The law, which was passed in a 75-30 vote, is commonly seen to be aimed at the type of clothing worn by a small number of conservative Muslim women. The new law allows for exceptions such as cold weather and the wearing of motorcycle helmets, in accordance with local traffic rules.
Effective from August 1 this year, breaking the law will incur a fine of 1,000 Danish kroner ($156). Austria, France and Belgium have similar legislation.
