Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko appeared at a news conference following reports the day before that he had been assassinated. (Guardian)
Babchenko was reported shot outside his home in Kiev on Tuesday, May 29, and said to have died in an ambulance, but he appeared alive and well the following day.
A military veteran and former war correspondent, Babchenko left Russia last year after, he said, he had received “thousands” of death threats over a story about a Russian military plane crash. He was critical of Russian president Vladimir Putin and Russia’s actions in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.
A spokesman for the Ukraine State Security service said the fake killing was staged to catch people who had actually been trying to kill the Putin critic. (Guardian)
At the press conference, Babchenko apologized to his wife for letting her believe that he had been murdered. Yet, in a later interview with BBC Babchenko contradicted his official statement, stating his wife had in fact been aware of the operation.
The would-be attacker was caught as a result of the operation and is in custody, Babchenko said, according to a Reuters correspondent.
