Fairy possum of Australia in danger of extinction


Comic actor Barry Humphries, in his guise as housewife Dame Edna Everage, often addressed people as “possums.” It’s a famous joke, but the reality is grim for an appealing small creature in Humphries’ home Australian state of Victoria.

Leadbeater’s possum, native to forest areas north-east of Melbourne, is high on the Zoological Society of London’s list of mammals on the brink of extinction. SBS, a community broadcaster, reported the remarks of Senator Janet Rice at a Senate meeting on May 22. Senator Rice criticized lack of action to protect the possum, which she said was being “monitored”  but not protected from logging activity.

Leadbeater’s is also known as a fairy possum. In recent years severe bushfires have also reduced its habitat (ABC).
