Syria and Russia accuse Israel of bombing airbase

Israel was responsible for bombing a Syrian airbase near the city of Homs on April 9, the Syrian and Russian militaries said. At least 14 people died and several injured in the strike on the Tiyas air field, also known as T-4, according to UK-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Syrian state news agency Sana reported that Israeli aircraft attacked from Lebanese airspace with eight missiles, but that Syria was able to destroy five of them. Iran’s state media also called the strike an “Israeli assault” and said victims included 4 Iranians.

Israel has yet to comment on the allegations, but its military has carried out a number of air strikes in Syria since 2012, including one on T-4 last February. Israel considers Iranian involvement in Syria to be a major regional threat.

Syrian media initially blamed the United States for the attack. The missile strike comes days after a suspected chemical attack in the rebel-held city of Douma, in Eastern Ghouta. France and the U.S. have both threatened to respond to the alleged chemical attack, which Syria and Russia deny took place.
