Regarding “Colleagues of Kogan had concerns over how he used data”. I was reflecting on why, if such scientist had ethical concerns they haven’t been more vocal about it and prevented something bad from happening. Now, I am not sure if this is the case, but it got me thinking about internal politics in academic institutions. This is an immense can of worms, and I don’t want to generalize, but in my experience there is a lot of decisions made out of vanity and faculty looking for their own interest preventing healthy debate and productive to be conducted. There is the whole “pay for publish” ecosystem (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/digital-activists-suicide-casts-spotlight-on-growth-of-open-access-movement/, https://www.sciencealert.com/this-woman-has-illegally-uploaded-millions-of-journal-articles-in-an-attempt-to-open-up-science), the whole “corporate finance supporting research that hides issues with their products” problem (highlighted by Ben Goldacre – http://www.badscience.net/) the whole “a malicious researcher can be cited without diligent peer review and propagate a fallacy that ruin countries” issue (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/04/microsoft-excel-the-ruiner-of-global-economies/). All in all, I think it is a rich field for an in-depth article.

We have a freedom of information request in to the university on exactly that, thanks. It turns out other academics complained about this four years ago and the university had to bring independent arbitrators.
