A story describing the recent history (I’m thinking post-1992) of U.S./North Korea talks and negotiations, and the results, would be timely. I believe the Clinton and Bush administrations, directly or indirectly through at least the State Department, had extensive communications with North Korea. Understanding the recent history will provide a baseline to assess this overture.

Hey Steve. That sounds like a pretty good idea for an explainer. Would you like to try writing it?

George — I’d love to take a crack at it. Is there a firm deadline, or should I consider it asap?

Great. How about a loose two-week deadline (March 23)?

I think a 500-600 word, 4-5 paragraph explainer with a clear angle would be really interesting. How about this for your angle: US/DPRK talks are not new, here’s how they’ve panned out in the past. If you’ve got another angle in mind, even better! And don’t worry too much about the peg as we have quite a few coming up in the next month and a half, it’d seem.

In case you’re looking for structure tips, I find this one from “The Economist explains” really helpful:
          Paragraph 1: the set-up/question
          Paragraph 2: the background
          Paragraph 3: the actual explanation
          Paragraph 4: the consequences/implications

Let me know if you have any questions.
