The briefing on Joshua Wong’s previous prison sentence has several significant inconsistencies with reporting by other news outlets and should be resolved:

    1. “The “Umbrella Movement” was a set of protests against Beijing’s decision on proposed reforms to Hong Kong’s electoral system” – others say the protests were against the Hong Kong government’s proposed electoral reforms themselves, on which Beijing has yet to make a decision (because the proposals were voted down in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council).
    2. “…decision on proposed reforms to Hong Kong’s electoral system which activists saw as a pre-screening of candidates for Hong Kong’s leader.” This is ambiguous: it could mean that Beijing’s (non-existent) decision is the pre-screening, or the proposed reforms amount to pre-screening.
    3. “Joshua Wong had begun serving his six months community jail sentence for unlawful assembly in August 2017 and was granted bail,”. Others report that Wong had already completed a non-custodial community service order, not jail.
    4. “but the Hong Kong government appealed against this decision” – it’s unclear what “decision” is referred to. The Hong Kong government appealed against the community service sentence, even though it had already been completed.
    5. “refusing to leave a protest zone” – others say the offence was obstructing the clearance of the protest zone, which is significantly different.

“…after Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threatened to launch an assault on the region for months.”

This reads as though Erdoğan is threatening a months-long assault. Clearer to write:

“…after months of threats from Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to launch an assault on the region.”
