Google has promoted new features in its series of voice-controlled speakers at CES (formerly the International Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas. It has also emerged that the company quietly purchased a UK startup called Redux in August. The Cambridge-based startup focuses on technology that turns surfaces like phone displays into speakers, as reported by Bloomberg.

Redux has invented and developed a technology that helps eliminate the need for speakers in mobile phones, freeing up valuable space for batteries or other add-ons.

Redux was founded in 2013 by Nedko Ivanov. The company has set out to create products that “enable customisable, high-resolution haptic feedback and speakerless surround sound audio,” according to its Crunchbase profile.

Google has yet to comment on a purchase price, or any other aspect of the acquisition.
