An online star whose personal YouTube channel has over 15 million subscribers will be removed from the video-sharing website’s premium advertising stream, as the Guardian reports.

Logan Paul posted a video on New Year’s Eve that depicted him and a group of friends finding a dead body before reacting with shock and making jokes.

The incident took place in a Japanese forest at the base of Mount Fuji, “known to be a frequent site of suicides” (BBC). Japan has one of the highest suicide rates among OECD countries (Washington Post) and the video drew widespread criticism with online comments describing it as “disgusting” and “disrespectful” (BBC).

YouTube has removed 22-year-old Paul from the Google Preferred program through which brands sell ads on the top 5 percent of the platform’s content generators. Ongoing projects between the vlogger [blogger who uses video] and the site have been put on hold.

Logan Paul took to Twitter to apologize, stating that he was “misguided by shock and awe”. Later he tweeted he was “taking time to reflect”. He is still able to generate revenue through YouTube’s general monetization stream (Guardian).

YouTube has been subject to widespread criticism including the promotion of false conspiracy videos (Guardian) and displaying inappropriate content (BBC) on its children’s app.

In an open letter to its community, YouTube said it was “upset by the video” adding that it was taking steps to ensure similar videos are “never circulated again”.
