Russian intellilgence says organizer of Saint Petersburg supermarket explosion detained

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) says it has detained the individual behind a bombing that injured 18 people in a supermarket in the Russian city of St Petersburg. Details beyond that were vague.

“On December 30, FSB identified and detained the organizer and immediate perpetrator of the homemade explosive device blast in St. Petersburg ‘Perekrestok’ supermarket,” according to the FSB’s press service, quoted by Moscow-based news network RT reports.

The blast, which occurred on Wednesday, was carried out with an explosive device with the power equivalent to an estimated 200 grams of TNT, according to RT.

Islamic State claimed responsibility, with President Vladimir Putin declaring the incident a terrorist attack during a recent speech (RT).

“I have instructed the director of the Federal Security Service … to act within the framework of the law during detention [of suspected terrorists.] But if there’s a threat to a police officer’s life and health, our officers need to act decisively, take no prisoners, kill the assailants on the spot,” Putin said
