The main cause of death of Israeli soldiers last year was suicide, followed by car accidents, according to an Israeli Army study reported in The Times of Israel.
Fifteen soldiers, all of them male, killed themselves in 2017, the newspaper reported, quoting a senior official in the IDF’s Manpower Directorate. It said the toll remained the same in the previous two years and had fallen sharply since the early 2000s before policies were put in place to combat stresses on soldiers. In total 41 soldiers died while working with the IDF in 2017 – 12 in car accidents and seven in military operations.
Compared to other armies in the world, the suicide rate in the Israeli army is lower, according to the report.
